Chatoyancy is a special effect produced by some gemstones. Chatoyancy, derived from the French for cat's eye, is caused by the fibrous structure of a gemstone's material which creates the impression of a moving band of colour. This optical effect is found in tiger eye jewelry, beryl and moonstone, among others.
Commonly, such jewellery eliciting the chatoyancy phenomenon is referred to as cat's eye jewellery. This sometimes creates a false idea that there is a particular type of gem called a "cat's eye". There isn't. Chatoyancy - or cat's eye - is an effect found in some types of gemstones.
