What is chatoyancy?

Beaded Cats Eye Silver BangleChatoyancy is a special effect produced by some gemstones.  Chatoyancy, derived from the French for cat's eye, is caused by the fibrous structure of a gemstone's material which creates the impression of a moving band of colour.  This optical effect is found in tiger eye jewelry, beryl and moonstone, among others.

Commonly, such jewellery eliciting the chatoyancy phenomenon is referred to as cat's eye jewellery.  This sometimes creates a false idea that there is a particular type of gem called a "cat's eye".  There isn't.  Chatoyancy - or cat's eye - is an effect found in some types of gemstones.

Chatoyant stones are alluring when they are worked into an item of jewellery.  It makes items of jewellery endlessly captivating and vivacious.  Mochishop has a limited range of cats eye jewellery and tiger eye jewellery which bears chatoyancy.  To add chatoyant jewellery to your collection, check out your chatoyant items at Mochishop now.
