What is Pearl and Mother-of-Pearl Jewellery

Pearl is one of the most popular types of jewellery for women. A stone of dreamlike, milky hues the pearl is an essential piece of decoration for the ear, the neck or the wrist.

But what exactly is pearl?  Pearl (as with jet or coral) is unlike most other gemstones because it is organic rather than inorganic (NB. most gemstones are derived from mineral and rock formations).

Pearls are formed when an irritation, such as a parasite or pice of organic matter, affects the lining of a mollusc shell, e.g., an oyster.

The pearl produces calcium carbonate from its pearl sac which grows around the irritation to seal it off.

From this remarkable process of nature, we are provided with the pearl jewel which has come to symbolise luxuriousness and elegance.

Mochishop has pearl earrings (both stud and drop varieties) and pearl bracelets in traditional white and also in pink, peach and black.  We have both regular pearls and baroque pearls, depending on your preference.

Mother-of-pearl is also a product of a mollusc shell.  mother-of-pearl is in fact the lining of a mollusc shell otherwise known as the nacre.  The nacre is rainbow-like and is a fascinating material for use in jewellery.

Our mother-of-pearl bracelets are an exotic array of oranges, turquoises, lime-greens and purples.

Why not treat yourself to Mochishop's pearl and mother-of-pearl jewellery as part of your essential jewellery collection!
