Hematite jewellery: Popular in Victorian times now making a comeback!

Hematite is a crystal gemstone which appears to be a metallic black colour but is actually blood-red, hence the name hematite (heamo being Greek for blood).  Hematite was extremely an extremely popular stone in Victorian times and many articles of jewellery were crafted from it.

After a long spell of obscurity, hematite jewellery is returning to fashion due to its space-age look.  To lend credence to the space-age credentials of haematite it should be noted that hematite is found on the planet Mars.

Focusing on the metallic, galactic lustre of hematite Mochishop has produced a line of hematite jewellery for men and for women.  Our mens range is sleek and stark, using hematite slabs fixed onto an elastic mesh to make them adjustable to any wrist size (please see our mens hematite jewellery range). Our women's range features magnetised haematite to create modern, wrap-around jewellery which can be worn as bracelets, necklaces or anklets (please see our womens hematite jewellery section for more).

The Significance of Ox Bone in Tribal Jewellery

oxThe great thing about tribal jewelry is that you often find jewelry is made from unusual, exciting material which you wouldn't associate with more traditional types of jewellery.

One such special material Mochishop uses in its jewellery is ox-bone. Ox-bone is significant because the ox - or Yak - is found in the mountainous Tibetan landscape. Consequently, the use of ox-bone in jewellery is uniquely Tibetan.

That is why much of Mochishop's ox-bone jewellery incoroporates Tibetan designs onto the surface of the bone. Consider our necklace featuring the mystical symbol 'Om', for example. Or our Tibetan necklaces which feature Tibetan patterns.

Moreover, a little further east, in China, the ox is also significant as it features in the Chinese zodiac and connotes the following epithets: Dependable, calm, methodical, born leader, patient, hardworking, ambitious, conventional, steady, modest, logical, resolute, tenacious.

These oxen attributes are represented in our ox-bone jewelry, in the way we design and craft every piece. If you are looking something different to conventional jewellery, if you are looking for something which is exciting and exotic, then our ox-bone jewellery is just the thing you are looking for.

What Is Tribal Jewellery?

Mochishop likes tribal jewellery [tribal jewelry].  We stock a huge range of what we call tribal, as this is among our design specialities.  But what exactly is jewellery which is "tribal"?

t001Tribal - in context of jewellery and accessories - is a term which is interchangeable - if not absolutely synonymous - with ethnic or regional.   In other words, we can agree that tribal jewellery has elements of design, material or craft which are exclusively local.  We feel that this a very important distinction, in a world where most things are homogeneous and mass-produced.  Few consumables we buy these days have any real identity.  And surely identity is exactly what we are looking for in a piece of jewellery.

In the first part of What Is Tribal Jewellery? we will give a few illustrations of the products we have which hail from the Eastern part of the globe -t002

At Mochishop we have, for instance, ox-bone jewellery.  Our ox-bone jewellery is decidedly Tibetan as the ox - or yak to be precise - is a domesticated beast of Tibet.   Consequently our ox-bone jewellery incorporates Tibetan designs and themes.  We have ox bone jewellery bearing Tibetan symbols, necklaces depicting Tibetan cosmology and pendants bearing the Tibetan spiritual chant om mani padme hum.

Many of our ox-bone designs are replicated in other materials.  You will also find Tibetan spiritual chants inscribed on our Tibetan silver ring necklace, and our bronze mantra pendant.

t003Moving westward from Tibet into China, we have a range of dragon jewellery as the dragon is an important part of Chinese myth and legend.  In true Chinese style, we have a jade dragon necklace as well as a dragon and phoenix bracelet.  Like the dragon, the mythical phoenix is an indelible part of Chinese folklore.  Often the dragon and phoenix are paired together as symbols of lovers, the masculine and feminine.

From Asia we go to Polynesia, from which we have introduced a brand new range of ceramic pendants with Polynesian signatures.  In this style we have both a green swirl necklace and blue swirl necklace.  Other tribal necklaces bear Polynesian god heads.t004

We hope we have given a clear illustration about what tribal jewellery is, and how it pertains to local culture, not global.  We also hope that you have enjoyed looking at some of our examples of jewellery which are made with Eastern motifs and materials.  Be they Tibetan, Chinese or Polynesian, there are plenty of styles for those who like the look of adventure and exploration.

In Part 2 we'll bring you examples of Mochishop Jewellery [jewelry] that has its origins in the regional cultures of the Western world.

Jewellery In Film - The Jade Scorpion

By Woody Allen's own admission, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion is about an insurance investigator (Woody Allen) and an efficiency expert (Elizabeth Berkley) who are hypnotised by a scorpion made from jade.  In spite of the relative poorness of the film, it still makes Mochishop's "jewellery in film" list if only for its explicit reference to jade ornamentation and the fact that the major storyline is about a jewellery heist:

Under the hypnotise influence of the jade ornament, the characters portrayed by Allen and Berkley are compelled to steal expensive jewellery.  The hypnotically spell is activated and deactivated with the respective buzz-words Madagascar and Constantinople.
