What Is Cats Eye

N
ot so long ago there was a clue in a daily newspaper's crossword: Gemstone (4,3).  The answer to the clue was cat's eye.

The belief that cats eye is a variety of gemstone is not an uncommon mistake.  The mistake is probably compounded by the existence of de facto gemstones tigers eye and hawks eye.  Actually, cats eye - or chatoyancy - is an optical effect produced by certain gemstones.  It is usually found in fibrous gemstones such as quartz, beryl and moonstone.  The effect is like a narrow eliptical band of light which moves as the gemstone is oriented.

Jewellery by Colour

Jewellery websites commonly allow you to browse jewelley by material, e.g., silver, turquoise, pearl and so on.  This is a useful method for browsing websites as often we have a favourite gemstone, or indeed birthstone, that we wish to buy.

However, shoppers sometimes prefer to buy according to colour rather than any type of stone.  It may be that you've bought a new dress and simply want a piece of jewellery with a matching or complimentary colour to your new dress.  Browsing by material type can be useful in this regard, but it isn't a perfect method of searching.

For instance, if we want to buy an item of jewelry which is green we may know that jade is green so we have the option of searching the "jade" link.  However, jade also comes in a number of other colours so a search on jade is likely to yield irrelevant results among the relevant.  The same is true of coral which is understood to be red, but also has pink and black variants.  It is also true of many other gemstones which are primarily associated with a single colour.

Moreover, if a buyer simply wants a green item of jewellery but is on tight budget, then searching the jade section for green items might not be the best use of her time.

The most obvious solution - which is seldom employed by jewellery websites - is to allow customers to search their items by colour.  And this method has been implemented by Mochishop.  In the bottom right-hand corner of the website is a section called "shop by colour" which enables customers to see all our shop items which include a particular colour, just by clicking a link.

So, if you're looking for a yellow item to match your blue outfit, click the "yellow" link to pull up all our items of yellow jewellery.  Have a try, see what colourful items you can find to match your clothes.

The Two Jades

Jade is an intriguing gemstone, mostly green but found in a variety of other colours such as lavendar and mutton-fat yellow.  Interestingly, jade is not a single gemstone but two gemstones: jadeite and nephrite.jade001

For centuries it was assumed that jadeite and nephrite were the same stone but it was only in the 19th Century - and due to the scientific advances of the time - that these two similar stones were found to be different.

Perhaps for the sake of convenience we still refer to both stones as jade rather than calling them by their separate titles.

But they have enough similar properties to both be accurately known as jade: a predominately green colour, a greasy lustre and a not-too-dissimilar hardness.

What Is My Ring Size?

Mochishop features an excellent range of adjustable silver rings which fit everyone so that you don't need to worry about whether your ring will fit.  But in case you are curious, we will show you how to find out your ring size without the need for ring sizing tools:

1. Take a strip of paper about 1/2 inch long and wrap it around the base of the finger you are choosing a ring for.

2. With a pen, make a mark on the paper where it overlaps.

3. Remove the paper from your finger and using a ruler measure the start of the paper strip to the mark you made with your pen.

4. Use this measurement in conjunction with Mochishop's ring chart (below) to find out your finger size.

Zodiac Stones and Birthstones

Since antiquity astrological tradition have imbued gemstones with otherworldly and mystical properties. Over time astrologers began to juxtapose star signs with gemstones in order to develop their indigenous cosmologies. Among the cultural traditions to adapt star signs to gemstones were the Ancient Indians and Babylonians.

The Western astrological revision which emerged from the Babylonian, then Hellenistic, Zodiac gives us our modern rendition of the horoscope where star signs are paired with gems. For example, Aquarius is twinned with garnet, Pisces with amethyst etc.

As people tend to think of time in terms of the Gregorian calendar more so than the horoscope, a simultaneous tradition of associating gemstones with months has formed. In this respect, one would pair garnet with January as opposed to Aquarius (January 21st-February 19th).

NB. Gemstones are not used interchangeably between the Zodiac and the Gregorian calendar as some gemstones appear in one system but not another.

The custom of wearing birthstones can be traced to fifteenth century Poland and although there have been many worldwide variations of the pairing of birthstones with gemstones, an attempt has been made - due to our modern world being a global-village, no doubt - to standardise the list of birthstones; hence our modern association of November with citrine and December with turquoise.

Jewellery In Film - Double Indemnity

Double Indemnity is consistently ranked one of the best films in the noir genre, bringing together the talents of Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G Robinson for a complex, moody tale of deception and murder.

film003

Insurance salesman Walter Neff's (MacMurray) fate is sealed the day he meets his wealthy client's young wife, Phyllis Dietrichson who seduces the hapless Neff to murder her rich husband in an attempt to cash in on a double-indemnity taken out against the husband's life.

And what is that seduces Neff into his lust and folly?  The sight of Mrs Dietrichson atop the stairs wearing nothing but a towel around her waist... and a golden anklet.

"That's a honey of an anklet you're wearing, Mrs Deitrichson"
